ACT 3 SCENE 2


1.  What is Juliet talking about in the soliloquy that opens the scene?  Consider multiple topics, and support your claims with specific lines from the speech.

2.  In lines 40-70 the nurse confuses Juliet as she tells Juliet of the fight.  What misconception does Juliet make?

3.  Look at lines 79-91.  When Juliet figures out that Romeo killed Tybalt, what is her reaction?  What literary device does she use throughout those lines?

4.  Highlight Juliet’s lines 99-106.  When the nurse agrees with Juliet, Juliet has a different reaction to Romeo’s killing of Tybalt.  Explain.

5.  What lines/phrases from Juliet’s long speech best capture her melodramatic nature?

6.  What troubling statement does Juliet make near the end of the scene?  Start a list of lines characters make hinting at death.


ACT 3 SCENE 3


1.  Highlight line 13-15 and 18-24.  What is Romeo’s reaction when he learns that he has been banished?

2.  What lines/phrases in Romeo’s speech (31-54) best capture his melodramatic nature?

3.  From the beginning of the play, Romeo acts impulsively.  In what way is he still impulsive in this scene (lines 111-117)?

4.  Friar Laurence tells Romeo to count his blessings.  What are they (line 145-152)?

5.  Explain Friar Laurence’s plan (lines 156-164).


Scene 4

1.  What has Capulet decided?  How does this go against his previous statements regarding her marriage?  What is the timing he proposes?
